Haliburton Forest Reserve

Although Algonquin Inn is located right on the border of world famous Algonquin Provincial Park you may not be aware that we are also situated just north of the 50,000 acre private wildlife reserve Haliburton Forest. Haliburton Forest is open year round and is known for the destination attractions of the Wolf Centre, Walk In The Clouds forest canopy tour and the underwater Submarine tour. Haliburton Forest also has many outdoor adventure opportunities including mountain biking, dog sledding, groomed snowmobile trails, hiking, astronomy & wildlife observation.

Haliburton Forest specializes in outdoor education and workshops including corporate training.

The Forest has many lakes on the extensive carefully managed wilderness property.

The Wolf Centre is very interesting and home to a pack of Timber Wolves in a large enclosure. One way glass provides guests with a chance to view the pack close up from the observatory. The centre also offers numerous education displays and daily movie presentations. Most people however spend much of their time studying the habits of the wolves.

The Walk In The Clouds is also a great venue that requires advance booking. The canopy boardwalk takes you on a scenic trek through the tree tops some 20 metres above the forest floor. After a short bus ride to the lake you'll take a canoe ride across a wilderness lake to a stand of old growth pine where you receive training and embark on your trip to the tree tops. It is the longest canopy walk in the world at over half a kilometer in distance. Snacks are supplied up in the trees on a large platform.

How about a submarine tour? The world's only fresh water submarine takes you down to the bottom of McDonald Lake where you can watch the ancient Haliburton Gold Lake Trout species.

The submarine offers all the features that you might expect in a submarine including digital and underwater communications. Large port holes allow a great view into the underwater world. The whole program including instruction takes about 2.5 hours and the experience is one you can't duplicate anywhere in the world.

Haliburton Forest is a prime Ontario wilderness getaway for eco activity. While staying at Algonquin Inn and visiting the Park don't forget to plan Haliburton Forest into your vacation.
